Why Is My Car AC Blowing Hot Air?

April 28, 2022

Now that you’ve made it through winter, summer is right around the corner. One thing that you can’t go without is an AC. This is one of the most complex systems in your car. If your AC is blowing out hot or warm air, there could be various causes. Knowing them can help you determine how to fix it and the costs you will need to pay.

Causes of Hot Air Blowing out of AC

Refrigerant Leak

Are you asking, “Why my car AC is blowing hot air?” There are many issues, with one being a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant is a liquid that moves through the AC system in your car. While it circulates, it also contracts and expands, removing any humidity and heat from the cabin. Without the proper refrigerant levels in your car, additional components of the AC will not properly function.

A leak can be due to an old hose or a punctured or rusted evaporator. To properly diagnose a refrigerant leak, a mechanic will inject dye into the system. They will be able to repair or recharge your AC once they determine the source of the leak. It will then be able to blow out cold air once again.

Faulty Condenser

The refrigerant in your car’s AC will absorb the heat and humidity when your AC system pulls it out of the cabin. The responsibility of the condenser is to keep the refrigerant levels cool so the cycle can continue. The cycle will break down if the condenser is not properly functioning. This is why you will notice a blast of hot air coming through your AC vents.

If this sounds like your issue, you may be able to diagnose the problem by looking through the grate. Additionally, you can determine when your vehicle began having AC issues, such as following a fender bender or something similar. In this case, your condenser may have become broken on impact.

Compressor is Broken

The heart of the AC is the compressor. It is responsible for circulating the refrigerant through the AC system. Without a properly working condenser, the antifreeze will not be able to reach the condenser for cooling purposes.

After long periods of inactivity, compressor problems may pop up. This could come following a long winter without using the AC.

Issues with the Electrical System

If all the other components of the AC are working correctly, the reason your car may be blowing hot air is probably due to electrical problems. A blown fuse or a frayed wire can prevent the AC from functioning properly. However, to correctly diagnose an electrical issue, a complete visual inspection of your vehicle’s fuse box and wiring will need to be done.

There may be various reasons for car blowing hot air. If any of the above issues are the problem, you should have your vehicle properly inspected so you can ensure your car receives fresh, cool air again.
